چکیده

BACKGROUND: Legionella spp. in groundwater sources have been reported to be the cause of waterborne infections, specifically Legionnaire’s Disease and Pontiac Fever. Legionellae are known to be ubiquitous in surface waters, but much less is known about their occurrence in groundwater, which is the source of potable water for millions in North America. Federal drinking water regulations may not eliminate the threat of Legionella exposure from groundwater-derived drinking water. The primary reason is because current regulations focus on fecal contamination. Presently, there is no evidence that demonstrates an association between fecal contamination and Legionella.

Occurrence of Legionella in groundwater: an ecological study.

The natural habitat of Legionella is the water environment. Little is known about their presence in groundwater in spite of the fact that many millions around the globe regularly rely on groundwaters. This pilot study was aimed at evaluating the occurrence of Legionella in groundwater samples (water and biofilms) collected from various sites. Water and biofilm samples from selected groundwater ...

ارتباط آلودگی آب به لژیونلا با عناصر جزئی در سامانه آب بیمارستان‌های منتخب تهران

Background and purpose: Water microelements can influence the growth and colonization of Legionella and infections associated with these bacteria. This research investigated Legionella contamination of water regarding microelements, alkalinity and hardness in selected hospitals of Tehran. Materials and methods: Hundred-fifty samples with 4 L volume were collected from cold and warm water sys...

Occurrence and Genetic Diversity of Uncultured Legionella spp. in Drinking Water Treated at Temperatures below 15°C

Representatives of the genus Legionella were detected by use of a real-time PCR method in all water samples collected directly after treatment from 16 surface water (SW) supplies prior to postdisinfection and from 81 groundwater (GW) supplies. Legionella concentrations ranged from 1.1 10 to 7.8 10 cells liter 1 and were significantly higher in SW treated with multiple barriers at 4°C than in GW...

Detection and identification of Legionella species from groundwaters.

Legionellae are opportunistic bacterial pathogens causing Legionnaires' disease and Pontiac fever and are ubiquitous in surface waters and in infrastructure to contain or distribute water, including pipes, cooling towers, and whirlpool spas. Infection in community-acquired and nosocomial outbreaks is by exposure to contaminated aerosols. Little is known about the presence of legionellae in grou...

Presence and persistence of Legionella spp. in groundwater.

Groundwater samples (111) from six different boreholes located in two geographical areas were examined for the presence of legionellae over a 7-year period. The number of Legionella isolates detected was generally low. The colonization of the aquifers was not uniform, and the persistence of Legionella was independent of the hydraulic pumps and the plumbing system present in the borehole. A tota...
